A Study on Next-Generation Wireless Access with Higher Frequency Bands

(in English) Recently, radio access technologies for fifth generation (5G) over higher frequency bands have been extensively studied. The authors are engaging in their realization especially operated in SHF-EHF bands. This paper suggests novel cell concepts satisfying demands for 5G radio access and presents channel propagation characteristics in the bands, so that advantages of utilizing the bands are discussed. Furthermore, the authors show a study on massive MIMO, which is one of the potential approaches exploiting the SHF-EHF bands, from a theoretical viewpoint based on channel capacity. The results of our feasibility study and evaluation of numerical complexities reveal the availability of the proposed architecture, practically composed of analog beamforming yielded by active phased array antenna (APAA) and MIMO spatial processing, namely APAA-MIMO strategy.
