Detection of Gaze Target Objects Using Active Markers

(in English) Eye gaze tracking (EGT) is a common problem with many applications in various fields. While recent methods have achieved improvements in accuracy and usability, current techniques still share several limitations. To solve this issue, the corneal imaging technique has been studied and applied for EGT, which can solve major issue of existing approaches such as depth-varying conditions. In this paper, we show a novel EGT approach using an active illumination marker and the corneal imaging. The active illumination marker consists of IR-LEDs, a micro-controller and a wireless communication module. It emits a time-coded pattern light according to the synchronization signal sent from a control PC through the wireless unit. Therefore, we can identify the markers from corneal reflection images by analyzing the illumination patterns. In EGT application, we obtain the relative angles between the light spot of the marker and the gaze reflection point (GRP) at the corneal surface, which indicate the reflected position of the gaze target. In experiments, we conducted a gaze shifting test using four markers and find the angular distance between the marker reflection and GRP is less than 3 degrees, which becomes 26cm when the gaze target is located from 5m away from the user. According to these results, we confirmed the system has enough accuracy for communication analysis and joint attention detection.
