Previous studies on video game suggested that the existence of opponent players increases competitive motivation and enjoyment of the game playing. However, it is not clear whether these increased motivation and enjoyment (i.e., high engagement) can be measured by an objective index. We hypothesized that attentional reactions to disrupt stimuli would reflect such highly engaged state. This study examined whether the competitive playing with an opponent player increase the attention resource to the video game than playing with the computer player. In this study, the participants played alone (single condition) or played with the fake player (competitive condition), while their brain activity was measured by means of event-related potential (P300) which reflects the attention resource to the task-irrelevant auditory stimuli. Results showed the amplitude of P300 in the competitive condition was smaller than that in the single condition, indicating that the playing with the opponent player increased the attention resource to the video game than playing alone. The subjective enjoyment, excitement, and happiness in the competitive condition were higher than those in the single condition. These results suggest that the existence of an opponent player makes participants high attention, enjoyment, happiness and excitement, that seem to reflect high engagement state in the video game playing. |
