In this paper, we propose a subgradient method to minimize half-perimeter wire length(HPWL) for circuit placement. Among circuit placement algorithms researched to date, analytical placement algorithms obtain recognition for achieving the best placement quality for large-scale circuit designs. Those methods use max and min functions which calculate the maximum and the minimum valuesof the coordinates of pins for nets. Since the max and min functions are nondifferentiable, approximate functions such as log-sum-exp function have been used to minimize total HPWL. The quality of the resultant placement is estimated by total HPWL over all nets. We describe how to apply subgradient methods to minimize total HPWL itself. Finally, an experimental result is also shown. |
