Across-channel temporal gap detection in vision -- The case of spatial frequency --

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) It is known that, in the auditory domain, temporal resolution is lowered in across-frequency than in within-frequency gap detection. This decrease in the temporal acuity is explained in terms of the processing channel of the leading and trailing markers of the gap. The human visual system is thought to contain channels each of which selectively responds to a limited range of spatial frequencies. In the present study, we conducted two temporal gap detection experiments with Gabor patches as the temporal markers to measure temporal resolution in vision. The leading and trailing markers were of identical frequency in the within-frequency conditions, and were of different frequencies in the across-frequency conditions. The results showed that the gap sensitivity decreased in the across-frequency as compared to the within-frequency conditions, suggesting that the across-channel processing in the spatial frequency domain lowers temporal resolution.
