Analysis of the Relationship between Pitch and Formant Frequencies in Voice Register Transition

(in English) When the voice pitch is raised gradually and the voice register changes from chest to falsetto, it is known that the motion of the vocal folds becomes instable and the voice pitch jumps abruptly. In terms of this voice register transition (VRT), further investigation is needed to reveal the influence of the interaction between voice source system and the vocal-tract filter. In this article, we examine the relationship between the fundamental frequency $f_0$ and the first-formant frequency $F_1$ in VRT. Three Japanese male speakers produced a rising-falling glissando with five Japanese vowels. The vibratory state of the vocal folds and the acoustic resonances of the vocal tract were measured simultaneously with an electroglottograph device and an external acoustic excitation method. We analyzed the temporal change in $f_0$ from electroglottograph signals and in $F_1$ using acoustic response signals from the vocal tract. The relationship between $f_0$ and $F_1$ values were then analyzed to determine the cause of VRT and abrupt jump of the $f_0$. As a result, $f_0$ was very close to $F_1$ when VRT took place especially for /i/ and /u/, strongly indicating the influence of the source-filter interaction as a cause of VRT.
