Performance of Outer-Loop Control of MCS Selection Based on Block Error in Each Resource Block for OFDM-MIMO SDM

(in English) This paper presents performance of outer-loop control for selecting modulation and coding scheme (MCS) based on mutual information (MI) computed from the received signal-to-noise power ratio (SNR) for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) - multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) spatial division multiplexing (SDM). In the outer-loop control, the computed MI is updated based on the instantaneous block error in each resource block (RB) so that the required BLER is satisfied. Computer simulation results show that the accurate outer-loop control for adjusting the MCS selection threshold is achieved when the average received SNR is larger than approximately 4, 6, and 8 dB for the target BLER of 10-1, 10-2, and 10-3, respectively. We also show that the maximum throughput associated with the target BLER is achieved when the step size for block error detection is approximately 10-2 - 10-1. Moreover, we show the effectiveness of the outer-loop control employing the variable step size to achieve fast convergence of the BLER for the sudden change of the maximum Doppler frequency.
