Enhancement of speech captured with a unidiractional microphone-array

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) In order to make clear recordings of distant speech, we are studying the following technologies:
(1) Forming a steerable spotlight-shaped directional beam to capture distant-speech clearly, and
(2) Enhancing a captured speech signal to shorten the aperture length of a microphone-array.
In this report, first a 2D microphone-array is proposed to produce the directional beam. Then, a post processing is examined to enhance a speech signal captured with an array of a short aperture length. This processing consists of noise reduction GSS (generalized spectral subtraction) and bass-augmentation VB (virtual bass) based on psychoacoustic phenomenon “missing fundamental.” According to CMOS (comparison mean opinion score) experimental results, the quality of VB-processed speech, when captured with an array of a short aperture length covering 0.7-to-4 kHz, was almost the same as that of non-processed speech captured with an array of an aperture length covering 0.3-to-4 kHz.
