Detection of oscillating magnetic fields using spin-lock imaging toward functional MRI

(in English) At present, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) based on blood oxygenation level dependent (BOLD) effect is commonly used as a noninvasive neuroimaging method.However, the problem is that the so-called BOLD-fMRI has limitations of spatio-temporal resolution due to its measurement principle, i.e., detecting hemodynamic processes.To overcome this problem, a new fMRI principle focusing on direct detecting of neural magnetic fields has attracted wide attention.In this study, we demonstrated the feasibility of fMRI using the spin-lock imaging, which is sensitive to oscillating magnetic fields such as neuronal magnetic fields. By the phantom studies modeling the neuronal magnetic fields, we showed that the externally applied oscillating magnetic fields decreased MR signals by choosing appropriate imaging sequence.This result suggests that the fMRI method using spin-lock imaging is promising to detect oscillating magnetic fields, in fact, neuronal magnetic fields directly.
