Computational validation of the information criterion WBIC by the exchange Monte Carlo method

(in English) In the models with hierarchy like artificial neural networks and mixture models, asymptotic normality, which AIC and BIC assumed does not hold. Although model selection in these models can be carried out with Bayesian framework, Bayes free energy, which is the evaluation function in this framework has huge computational cost. Recently, a widely applicable Bayesian information criterion (WBIC) was defined as an approximation of Bayes free energy. In this study, we verify the effectiveness of WBIC comparing with Bayes free energy by using the exchange Monte Carlo method.
