A Study on Improvement of Target Discrimination by Feature Enhancement in Rapid Serial Visual Presentation

(in English) In the conventional P300-based Brain Computer Interfaces, the interface where characters are matrix-arrayed has been used for the stimulus presentation. However, in this interface, the movement of viewpoint
is needed because of pointing to a character or a command which a user wants to input, then this movement of viewpoint could be serious problem for some users. To solve this problem, Rapid Serial Visual Presentation (RSVP) has been proposed. In RSVP interface, characters are presented one by one at a fixed location, usually the center, on a display, hence eye movements by a user are not required. In the matrix arrayed interface, a user is just required to discriminate whether the target character is flashed or not. On the other hand, in RSVP interface, user needs to discriminate the presented character from the other characters in a moment. Therefore, in RSVP interface, the performance to input characters is often reduced. This paper proposes the method of emphasizing features of presented characters partially in RSVP interface. The result of an offline experiment showed that the information transfer rate in the proposed method was four third as higher as the non-emphasizing method.
