Examination on dynamic property of metal hydride actuator

(in English) A metal hydride (MH) actuator uses the reversible reaction between the heat energy and mechanical energy of a MH alloy. A MH actuator can generate high force output even in small sizes because it can absorb and release approximately 1,000 times as much hydrogen gas as their own volume. The other advantages (e.g. silent driving, no vibration, no noise and mechanical buffer action resembling that of a cushion) make the actuators suitable as a source of motion for medical and welfare assistive devices as well. In this paper we compare the hydrogen release and absorption properties of a paper-type MH alloy and a powder-type MH alloy. Results demonstrate the potential of the MH actuator as assistive devices.
