Relay Node Selection considering the Remaining Energy in Smart Metering and its Evaluation

(in English) In wireless sensor networks for smart metering, the energy efficiency in communication control is essential, because most nodes are battery-powered. In RPL standardized as routing protocol for smart metering, network lifetime is not sufficiently long, since traffic load is concentrated on some specific nodes. This is because the remaining energy of each node is not considered in route construction. This paper proposes a novel route construction method for RPL which enables to prolong network lifetime. In the proposed method, the traffic concentration on specific nodes is avoided, considering the remaining energy, the link quality and whether the node is battery-powered or power-supplied. Simulation results show that the proposed method is effective, regardless of the number of power-supplied nodes in the low traffic.
