Method for flight path planning of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles for MANET

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) In recent years, mobile ad hoc network(MANET) using unmanned aerial vehicle(UAV) has attracted attention. MANET using UAV can improve communication speed and reachability between mobile nodes on the ground, because UAVs can connect long-distance communication in comparison with direct communication between mobile nodes on the ground. Therefore, this method is expected to be used effectively in a disaster area. However, as UAVs must flight continuously and communication area is not sufficiently wide to connect all mobile nodes on the ground in the whole of a disaster area, it is necessary to determine flight routes of UAVs (flight plan) appropriately.

In this paper, we propose algorithms to determine a flight plan of UAVs under the condition that mobile nodes move on a road network and all of the routes are known. This assumption is considered reasonable and proper, because the routes of mobile nodes are often determined beforehand by vehicle navigation system. We evaluated the algorithms by using the topology of actual road networks, and the algorithm that determine a fixed point for each UAV based on the mobility of mobile nodes and that the UAV flies in circles around the fixed point, worked well.
