Adaptive Frame Collision Reduction Method using Post-IFS for IEEE802.11 Wireless LAN System

(in English) The IEEE 802.11 distributed coordinated function (DCF) adopts carrier sense multiple access with collision avoidance (CSMA/CA) as its medium access control (MAC) protocol. CSMA/CA forces wireless local area network (WLAN) stations (STAs) to wait for the random backoff time prior to each frame transmission attempt. However, the more the number of competing STAs increases, the more the probability of the collision increases. Therefore, in congested situation by WLAN STAs, the performance of WLAN system is significantly degraded as the number of competing STAs increases. This paper proposes a simple but effective method that enables to decrease collision probability without accurate estimation of traffic condition. The proposed method refrains from consecutive transmission and waits for a certain period if previous transmission succeeded. This mechanism can lessen the number of competing STAs and reduce probability of frame collisions even if the proposed method cannot estimate optimal waiting time after a successful transmission. Moreover, we propose an adaptive control method to estimate the optimal waiting time. Computer simulations verify that the proposed method is able to obtain up to over 40% higher system throughput characteristic compared to the case in which the proposed method is not introduced when the number of stations in a network is 50.
