A study on random access with relaying for M2M communications

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Recently, Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communications among various devices, which communicate autonomously without the intervention of human, have been attracting a lot of attention.
The number of Machine Type Communication (MTC) devices conducting M2M communications is expected to be huge, which are envisioned to be accommodated in mobile communication systems.
In this case, random access of a large number of MTC devices can increase packet collision probability.
In order to reduce the packet collision probability, it is required to improve the resource utilization efficiency.
To this end, this paper focuses on the usage of relaying.
As an advantages of relaying, resource utilization efficiency is improved by reusing the same resource among different relays.
However, as a disadvantage, the relaying increases the required number of packet transmissions.
On the other hand, we can mitigate this disadvantage by employing packet aggregation at a relay.
In this paper, we analyze the inherent trade-off between these advantages and disadvantages, and investigate the possibility to improve the resource utilization efficiency by using relays for random access.
