Modulation Accuracy of a Polar-modulation EPWM Transmitter with a NMOS-type Class-D Power Amplifier

(in English) Switching-mode power amplifiers for wireless communication systems demand high power efficiency and linearity. Of the available types of high-efficiency switching-mode power amplifiers, envelope pulse-width modulation (EPWM) transmitters are advantageous because of their high power efficiency and linearity. A polar-modulation EPWM transmitter with a class-E power amplifier has high power efficiency but exhibits degraded error vector magnitude (EVM) performance if a lumped-element inductor is used for blocking signals in the power-supply line. This degradation is caused by phase distortion due to parasitic capacitance change of a transistor. This change is caused by a transient response biase in the transistor of the amplifier that occur when a burst RF signal is received. Through simulation, this paper demonstrates that the EVM performance of a class-D power amplifier is superior to that of a class-E power amplifier. In addition, the output power, drain efficiency, and power-added efficiency of the two power amplifier classes are compared.
