TDD-based Massive MIMO systems rely on channel reciprocity assumption (i.e. that the downlink channel matrix can be inferred from the uplink channel matrix), so that it suffices that the receivers send pilots in the uplink to the BS for the latter to determine the uplink channel matrix and subsequently the downlink channel matrix. However, since there are many UEs in Massive MIMO and the number of mutually-orthogonal pilot sequences is limited, some pilot sequences must be reused. This pilot reuse degrades uplink channel estimation in what is commonly known as the "pilot contamination" or "pilot pollution" problem. In this work, we provide a blind uplink channel estimation approach combined with a carefully defined transmit precoding, such that full-CSI-like performance is achieved. Because the proposed channel estimation is blind, there is no pilot contamination because there are no pilots in the first place. |
