Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) transmission, which uses multiple antennas at transmitter and receiver, can increase the maximum throughput by using the spatial multiplexing or can improve the received signal-to-noise power ratio (SNR) by using the spatial diversity. In a conventional cellular network or centralized antenna network (CAN) where antennas are co-located at the base station, although the use of spatial multiplexing can increase the throughput for a user near the cell center, the throughput degrades for a user near the cell edge due not only to the path loss but also to co-channel interference (CCI) from neighboring cells. Recently, we proposed single-carrier (SC)-MIMO communication using adaptive spatial multiplexing order selection to obtain the maximum throughput achievable with the present propagation environment. For wireless packet communications, hybrid automatic repeat-request (HARQ) is essential. Also distributed antenna network (DAN), where multiple antennas are distributed in a cell, can further improve the throughput performance because the high received signal power can be obtained over the entire cell. In this paper, we propose two packet combining methods: the bit log likelihood ratio (LLR) combining for adaptive selection of multiplexing order at each re-transmission and the minimum mean square error (MMSE) based combining for using the same multiplexing order as the first transmission. We compare the HARQ throughput performance of SC-MIMO communication with adaptive multiplexing order in DAN and CAN by computer simulation. |
