It is a time to design 5G wireless networks to accommodate recent explosion of mobile traffic due to smart phone and tablet terminals. We need to design the 5G smartly to open the future of wireless engineers. The 5G should support extremely higher data rate, seamless connectivity, green network, and lower CAPEX/OPEX, with an excellent business model to make both operators and vendors happy. One of the architectures of wireless networks to satisfy these conditions is “cloud cooperated heterogeneous networks (HetNet)”. In the cloud cooperated HetNet, ultra wideband small cells operated at higher frequency such as mm-wave are overlaid on conventional macro cells operated at lower frequency, and all of them are managed by cloud radio access networks (C-RAN). Such ultra wideband small cells provide extremely higher data rate, while heterogeneous structure between small and macro cells maintains seamless connectivity. Furthermore, centralized resource management by means of C-RAN achieves efficient and green wireless networks. This paper also introduces the concept of virtual operation to install and operate small cells cost effectively, which must be important in the business model of future wireless networks. From social perspective, the cloud cooperated HetNet is considered as the unification of different wireless systems operated in different frequency bands to achieve effective management of the whole spectrum band. Therefore, the key technology of 5G is the smart architecture of wireless networks to utilize chunks of whole spectrum band efficiently. |
