An analysis of pupil size about eye contact perception
Masafumi Matsuda (NTT), Motoyasu Honma (NCNP) HCS2013-74
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Eye contact is one of the most important cues in human communication. However, people are not always able to detect eye contact with others. Previous researches show that pupil diameters would dilate when people perceive an eye contact with others. This study investigates whether pupils dilate or not when the eye contact is not made physically but people assume it is done. The experimental, which 10 participants engaged 242 judgments of eye contact and measured their pupil diameter size, shows that pupil diameters significantly dilated when they perceive eye contact subjectively.
