Children's noun-object mapping using syntactic information
Yuka Ohtake, Etsuko Haryu (Univ. of Tokyo) HCS2013-79
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) The grammatical form class of a novel word helps us identify the appropriate referent onto which the word should be mapped. The present study investigated from when children use noun syntactic information to map a word introduced for an object-motion event onto an object. Since previous studies suggest that Japanese-speaking children become able to syntactically categorize nouns by 16 month of age, we tested 16- and 18- month-olds, using a habituation paradigm with switch design. The results showed that 16-month-olds mapped a noun introduced for an object-motion event to the compound of object and motion (Experiment 1). Eighteen-month-olds mapped the noun to the object independent of the motion (Experiment 2), whereas they mapped a word given in a bare form to the compound of object and motion (Experiment 3). The results suggest that the ability to use syntactic information to identify the appropriate referent for a novel noun develops in 16- to 18-month-olds.
