A Study on Ensuring Electromagnetic Immunity for Bioelectric Signal Sensors

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) In the nursing and welfare sector, for supporting the independence of individuals requiring nursing care, devices such as arm prostheses and wheelchairs that are controlled by myoelectric signals have been developed in the past decades. The measurement of bioelectric signals is sensitive to the electromagnetic environment since the human body constitutes a part of the measurement system, and it is difficult to implement perfect countermeasures against noise in the devices themselves. When using bioelectric signals as input for machine control, false readings from bioelectric signal sensors due to noise may lead to hazardous malfunction of the machine. In this study, we examined patents related to coutermeasures against noise for bioelectric signal measurements and considered methods for ensuring the safety of such devices against electromagnetic disturbance. In a fundamental experiment, we constructed a standard myoelectric potential sensor assumed to be embedded into personal care robots, and conducted a radiated immunity test to evaluate the electromagnetic immunity of the sensor.
