Distance measurement using parametric sound applied by pulse compression technique

(in English) This study is concerned with distance measurements using parametric sound applied by pulse compression technique to improve range resolution. To improve the range resolution in maintaining high azimuth resolution for parametric sounds with the long wavelength, pulse compression technique using linear frequency-modulated signals or chirp signals has been explored. In this report, we experimentally confirmed the distance measurement using the pulse compressed parametric sound. Fundamental experiments were carried out to measure the distance from a source to a disk target using an ultrasound transmitting transducer and a hydrophone for receiving transducer. The distance experimentally estimated by the proposed method agreed well with the actual distance of a target. However, appropriate design of transmitting and receiving transducers are needed for practical use.
