[Poster Presentation] A Study on Feedback Mechanism for ONU Sleep Control

(in English) The development of next-generation passive optical networks (PONs) is promoted through the spread of
broadband access services. In addition, the increase in the power consumption of optical access network systems becomes an
important issue. Cyclic Sleep is one of the power-saving techniques of optical network units (ONUs) in PON systems. The
Cyclic Sleep technique switches ONU sleep state and ONU active state periodically in the sleep mode. However, inappropriate
sleep control has the potential to degrade the quality of services (QoS), since the ONU cannot communicate with an optical
line terminal (OLT) when it enters the sleep state. The authors have proposed a cyclic sleep controller based on feedback
control techniques to maintain the downstream average queuing delay at a constant level and also reduce the ONU power
consumption. However, the conventional controller could not remove the steady-state errors between a target delay value and a
response delay value. This paper shows that appropriate parameter setting of an improved controller can reduce the steady-state
errors compared with the conventional controller.
