Dynamics of phase oscillator populations with multifrequencies

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Synchronization plays an important role in nature and its analytical research based on phase oscillator model have been widely conducted in recent years. However, several issues have been poorly understood, such as the dynamical properties of the chimera states characterized by the coexistence of the coherent and incoherent populations. For example, recent experimental results suggest that in the brain several different rhythms emerge and interact with each other. According to the phase reduction theory, the coupling function between two oscillators with significantly different frequencies is specific under the resonant condition. However, the phase oscillator model taking the account of this specific coupling function has been little studied so far. In this paper, we investigate the dynamics of the populations of the phase oscillators, in which the frequency distributions have significantly different means. Ott and Antonsen have recently developed the prominent theory, the Ott-Antonsen ansatz, which can reduce the infinite-dimensional dynamics of the phase oscillators to the low-dimensional dynamics. Applying the Ott-Antonsen ansatz to our model, we assume the specific form to the coupling function among slow oscillators. Investigating the dynamics of the phase oscillators in two populations with multifrequencies, we found the clustered chimera states in which the synchronized and unsynchronized populations coexist. Moreover, we numerically confirm the above results hold qualitatively even under the more general conditions.
