The characteristics of a compact optically-pumped atomic-magnetometer (OPAM) module were not described well by an uniform model neglecting the spacial distribution of the spin polarization of alkali metal atoms.
Here, we improved our model to include the distribution of the spin polarization in the small cell in order to obtain a better explanation of the characteristics of the module.
The Bloch equation with a diffusion term was numerically solved with a boundary condition of the spin relaxation due to the wall collision. In addition, the attenuation of the pumping laser beam was taken into the consideration.
The analysis of a prototype module with a 20 mm-cubic cell and 8 mm-diameter beams demonstrated that the relation between the optical pumping power and the signal response agreed well with that obtained in the experiment.
The result indicate that toward better understanding and improvement of compact OPAM modules, it is important to incorporate the inhomogeneity of the spin polarization in the cell of the sensor into the analysis. |
