Uplink Capacity Comparison between DS-CDMA and SC-FDMA in Distributed Antenna Network

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Distributed antenna network (DAN), in which many antennas are spatially distributed, can mitigate the negative impacts of not only the fading but also the propagation path loss and the shadowing loss, and accordingly, achieves a good transmission performance in the entire service area. Since the available bandwidth is limited, the multiple access technique, e.g., time division multiple access (TDMA), frequency division multiple access (FDMA), and direct-sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA), is needed. TDMA and FDMA respectively use the orthogonal time and frequency channels and the channel allocation is done based on the instantaneous channel state information of each user. On the other hand, in DS-CDMA, all users share the same frequency bandwidth since the interference can be suppressed by spreading/despreading process. Therefore, DS-CDMA does not require a complex channel allocation algorithm. However, fast transmit power control (TPC) and antenna diversity are essential. In this paper, we investigate the uplink capacity of DS-CDMA DAN and that of single carrier FDMA (SC-FDMA) DAN. It is shown by computer simulation that DS-CDMA DAN achieves higher uplink capacity than SC-FDMA DAN.
