We propose a novel InGaAs/InAlAs multiple quantum well (MQW) microring resonator-loaded Mach-Zehnder (MRR-MZ) 2×2 optical switch, and design and investigate its low-voltage operation theoretically. Very low-voltage operation is expected to be realized owing to the phase-shift enhancement in a microring and push-pull driving by double microring resonators loaded on arms of an MZ Interferometer. As an MQW, a multiple five-layer asymmetric coupled quantum well (FACQW) is assumed. It is found that the proposed MRR-MZ optical switch can be operated with low driving voltage as low as 0.24 V by the electro-optic effect caused by the quantum confined Stark effect (QCSE) in the multiple FACQW. |
