A Study on Discovery Signal for Efficient Macro-assisted Small Cell Discovery Mechanism in LTE SCE

(in English) In order to deal with an increasing mobile data traffic, a future radio access network may consist of macrocells with a large number of overlaid small cells that are densely deployed. If small cells are assigned a different frequency carrier from macrocells, there is no interference between macrocells and small cells so that a deployment effort for small cells can be relaxed. However, from a perspective of an user equipment, as a number of frequency carriers to be measured increases, the UE battery consumption and/ or the measurement delay would increase. In addition, a cell discovery performance may degrade in a dense small cell deployment scenario due to a severe interference between small cells, i.e., pilot pollution.
In this paper, we investigate a discovery signal design for the efficient small cell discovery mechanism based on macrocell assistance. We evaluate the cell discovery performance of the proposed macro-assisted discovery method with existing LTE/LTE-Advanced reference signals. Simulation results show that a muting method to reduce inter-cell interferences can improve the cell discovery performance such as a cell detection probability and measurement accuracy significantly.
