(in English) We aim to develop a method for conveying 3D shapes to visually impaired persons by tactile means. In conventional point-contact-type force feedback devices, it has been difficult to tactilely explore edges, which are important in recognizing 3D shapes. To improve the ease of tactilely explore edges, we have constructed a prototype device that can provide force feedback with three degrees of freedom to each of five points on a fingertip. Using this device, we performed a subjective assessment with the cooperation of six visually impaired persons on the ease of recognizing an object's edges as a function of the number of force-feedback points. When compared with the conventional point-contact method, the results suggested that the ease of recognizing edges improved significantly with two or more force-feedback points, and that could be most easily trace edges of an object when using four force-feedback points under the conditions of this experiment.
