Many mobile devices such as smartphones, mobile routers, and laptop PCs which equip wireless local area network (WLAN) interface are rapidly spreading in recent days. Almost these WLAN stations (STAs) employ carrier sense multiple access with collision avoidance (CSMA/CA). All STAs suffer from critical degradation in communication quality where many WLAN STAs are clustered. This is because the number of data frames collisions increases in proportion to the number of STAs due to CSMA/CA operation. Besides, CSMA/CA is designed in such a way that STAs try to transmit data frames consecutively if they have any data frames in their transmission queue. This foments the increase of collisions in a congested situation of WLAN STAs. This paper proposes the method that enables to decrease collision probability in such situation. The proposed method refrains from consecutive transmission for a certain period if previous transmission succeeded. Computer simulations verified that the proposed method can improve system throughput characteristics in a congested situation of WLAN STAs. Moreover, a system throughput characteristic against a hold time that waits after transmission was verified. The proposed method is able to obtain up to approximately 40% higher system throughput characteristic where the traffic load is saturated. |
