Three-dimensional analysis of subsiding ground -- A comparison of results using GPR-Slice and ArcGIS --

(in English) Subsurface anomalies related to subsidence of the ground beneath a house in south Georgia, USA were identified using a MAL?M 100 MHz GPR System on a 28 m x 51 m grid. Areas of both active and inactive subsidence ranging from 10 m2 to 25 m2 in size were evident as depressions on the land surface and in many of the GPR profiles. After minimal processing with RadExplorerTM to correct for time zero, remove DC electrical noise, and gain signal with depth, we cut ?time-slices? through the entire grid of 28 profiles using GPR-SliceTM. Twenty slices with a thickness of 11.5 ns were cut from the data collected between 23 and 192 ns. The results showed the areas of subsidence to be bounded by stable ground with a low dielectric constant. Although ?ringing? in some of the anomaly locations distorted their appearance at depth, features originating at approximately 100 cm below surface could be clearly defined in spite of some attenuation by overlying clayey soil. A ?top of rock? model was created using Arc-GISTM after picking a reflection from each GPR profile where the karst depressions were best defined. Attenuation by the overlying clayey soil created a corrugated appearance to the Arc-GISTM model although the ringing effects were removed. A spline function provided the most realistic model for contouring values between centroids picked from the GPR profiles.
