A Study for Measurement of Vocal-Tract Characteristics by using External Acoustic Excitation Method

(in English) An interrelation between the voice pitch and formants of the vocal tract plays an important role in a change of voice resisters and also in singing voices for which the pitch varies significantly. In this paper, an external acoustic excitation method was used as a reliable method to measure the frequencies of formants during the production of high-pitched voices. We applied a correlation method to extract the response of the vocal tract from measured signals, and at the same time, to eliminate signal components originated from speaker’s own voice. Formant frequencies were measured for five Japanese vowels when a male speaker uttered them with chest and falsetto registers. As a result, formant frequencies of each vowel were consistent between both registers, irrespective of a significant pitch difference, suggesting the usefulness of our measurement method as a tool for estimating formant frequencies.
