[Invited Lecture] Full-dimensional MIMO (FD-MIMO): Opportunities and Challenges

(in English) Full-Dimensional MIMO (FD MIMO), also known as Three-Dimensional MIMO (3D MIMO), is a new beamforming paradigm in cellular communications that is likely to increase spectral efficiency many folds beyond the spatial multiplexing gains of legacy MIMO systems, by exploiting the vertical dimension. It is currently considered by the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) as a possible feature of Long Term Evolution Advanced (LTE-A), Releases 12 and/or 13. In this talk, we start by introducing this new MIMO paradigm and some potential use cases. Then, we summarize the current state of research through a survey of the related state-of-the-art literature and the standardization progress made in the 3GPP RAN1 study item (SI) on 3D MIMO channel modeling. Lastly, we present some schemes that we propose to tackle some fundamental challenges when applying FD MIMO in wireless access networks.
