This paper describes a novel compact hardware oriented algorithm and its conceptual implementation for real-time traffic sign detection system. The speed limit recognition system is divided into two-pipeline stages of sign detection and speed limit recognition. The speed limit sign area on a grayscale video frame is detected based on a simple and compact rectangle pattern matching and circle detection modules. The frame is scanned with multi-scan windows in parallel for each position and each scan window is also processed in pipeline to increase throughput. The conceptual implementation for a single-scan window of rectangle pattern matching occupies a small number of hardware with short critical path. The small hardware size and short critical path characteristics allow our architecture applies to the real-time traffic sign recognition system. |
