Two-Switch Cell Voltage Equalizer Using a Half-Bridge Converter with Multi-Stacked Current Doublers

(in English) Voltage imbalance originating from nonuniformity of cell/module characteristics of energy storage devices, such as electric double-layer capacitors (EDLCs) and lithium-ion batteries, is well known to cause premature deterioration and to result in reduced available energy. In this paper, a two-switch voltage equalizer using a half-bridge converter with multi-stacked current doublers that provide low-ripple large equalization currents for cells/modules is proposed. The proposed equalizer supplies a low-ripple equalization current only for the cell/module having the lowest voltage in a series connected cells/modules, and hence, it is suitable for applications that require relatively large equalization currents. A prototype was built for four EDLC modules connected in series, and the experimental equalization was performed from an initially-voltage-imbalanced condition. The voltage imbalance was gradually eliminated over time, and all the module voltages ultimately became uniform, demonstrating the performance of the proposed equalizer.
