Contrast sensitivity for depth from very large disparity as functions of target velocity

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) It is well-known that an excessive disparity causes diplopia and unclear depth impression. However, we recently found that horizontal motion of the targets facilitates stereopsis for very large disparities. To examine the velocity tunings of the responsible mechanisms, we measured contrast sensitivities for depth discrimination as functions of target velocity using one-dimensional DoG targets. The space constants of positive Gaussians were 1.17, 2.34 and 4.67 deg, corresponding to 0.16, 0.08 and 0.04 c/deg peak special frequency, respectively. Two targets (one above and the other below the fixation point) were presented for 0.4 s in a raised cosine temporal window and 4.9 deg crossed and uncrossed disparities were given to one and the other targets. These targets drifted horizontally in the opposite direction with velocity of 0, 7.8, 16, 31, 62, or 125 deg/s. The results show that the highest sensitivity was obtained at around 15-30 deg/s for the smallest targets while the peak velocities were higher for the larger targets. It appears that dynamic mechanisms tuned to that velocity ranges mediate stereopsis for large depth.
