On Optimal Sequential Fusion in Biometric Identification

(in English) Biometric identification systems can provide a very convenient way of authentication because they do not require a user ID nor a smart card. However, the identification error rates increase as the number of enrollees increases. To improve accuracy while keeping high convenience, some studies proposed a sequential fusion scheme in identification which makes a decision each time a user inputs a biometric sample. In this paper, we prove that the likelihood ratio rule, one of the sequential fusion schemes, can minimize the average number of biometric inputs, by proving that it is equivalent to MSPRT (Multi-hypothesis Sequential Probability Ratio Test), a multi-hypothesis test which minimizes the average number of observations, under some conditions.
