Resonance Wavelength Fluctuations Caused by Different Discharge Conditions in Long-Period Fiber Gratings Fabricated by a Point-by-Point Arc Discharge Technique

(in English) Resonance wavelength fluctuations in long-period fiber gratings (LPFGs) cause a major issue for the design and production of optical devices based on LPFGs. It was demonstrated for the first time to our knowledge that resonance wavelengths of arc-induced LPFGs were fluctuated greatly by different discharge conditions. The narrower electrode spacing and the stronger discharge current induced the larger resonance wavelength fluctuation versus discharge time. The range of the resonance wavelength fluctuations reached 20 nm. As the discharge time increased, the resonance wavelengths decreased at first, and reached the minimum, and then began to increase. This resonance wavelength behavior is thought to result from the competition between the residual stress relaxation and the glass structure relaxation whose relaxation time is longer than the stress relaxation time.
