[Poster Presentation] The Development of Linguistic Cues for Event-Verb Mapping in Japanese Children

(in English) In this study, we investigated how Japanese-speaking 3-, 5-year-old children and adults utilize linguistic cues for novel verb learning and how the use of such cues develops. Our results showed that (1) the semantic cues (i.e., semantic role) are easier to utilize for extraction of the events than syntactic/morphosyntactic cues (i.e., the number of arguments/case particles) in the earlier stage of development, (2) along development, children come to use multiple cues effectively, and (3) even 5-year-old children do not have enough knowledge to utilizing linguistic cues in the same way as adults, suggesting that their mechanism for learning verbs is different from adults’.
