A System for Estimating Foodstuffs and Their Amounts in Fridge using Weight Sensor

(in English) It is difficult to manage foodstuffs stored in a fridge especially when it is shared among several users. Each user has to check the stock and the residual quantity of some foodstuffs in the fridge before they go shopping. However, this process is troublesome for users and also increases the power consumption of the fridge.
In this paper, we propose a method for estimating and managing the stock and the residual quantity of each foodstuff by weight sensors. We tackle the following challenges: (1) identifying all foodstuffs stored in the fridge; and (2) estimating the residual quantity of each stored foodstuff.
In our method, we assume that foodstuffs are taken out of (put in) the fridge one by one. Our method identifies the taken/put foodstuff by the weight change and the database recording the initial weights of all foodstuffs. In addition, our method estimates the residual quantity of the foodstuff by the weight change between before and after uses.
However, this method cannot uniquely identify the foodstuff if there are some foodstuffs having the same weight. To solve this problem, we adopt a technique that asks the user to select the appropriate foodstuff among candidates shown on a smartphone screen. We implemented a prototype of the proposed system and through an experiment, we confirmed that our method can accurately identify the foodstuff in a typical fridge usage scenario where multiple foodstuffs are put in and taken out of the fridge.
