A Howling Suppression using the Adaptive Multi Notch Filter

(in English) In a speakerphone system for videoconferencing or audio conferencing, etc., sounds output from a loud speaker is fed back into a microphone, which is occurring acoustic echoes that return back to a transmitting side. Furthermore, if the gain of the feedback system is 1 or more, the system becomes an oscillating state so-called howling. Since howling significantly impedes call, much research and development on howling suppression methods has been conducted heretofore. In this paper, we propose an adaptive notch filter that is suitable for suppression of howling. In addition, we propose an "adaptive multi-notch filter" that is cascaded adaptive notch filter and can suppress multiple frequencies. As the experimental result, the proposed method was confirmed to be superior convergence time and suppression performance for many type of howling. Furthermore, as the result of the real machine testing, it was confirmed that it is possible to suppress the howling.
