A transcendental equation occurs frequently to compute dispersion relations of an electromagnetic waveguide such as a planar multilayer waveguide. The problem of locating zeros of the transcendental equation can be solved by the Newton-Raphson method and the downhill simplex method with initial guess of locations and the number of the complex propagation constants. Without the initial guess, the Sakurai-Sugiura projection method (SSM) translates the transcendental equation into a linear matrix eigenvalue problem which gives all propagation constants in a region bounded by an integral path on a complex plane. In this paper, a transcendental equation of a multilayer waveguide dispersion relation obtained by the transfer matrix method is solved by SSM. Numerical results are compared with that of argument principle method (APM). |
