ONU Deep Sleep with Retransmissions of Upper Layer Protocols

(in English) The current optical access network has a significant issue that lifeline services like the telephone service provided by Voice over IP (VoIP) would not be available when the power source to an Optical Network Unit (ONU) is lost at the customer's premises. Although a battery backup unit (BBU) becomes a practical option to solve this issue, a large-capacity battery for a long backup time would impose a greater burden on the users. This paper proposes a novel method which applies a deep sleep approach to an ONU in consideration of the retransmission process at the upper layer protocol. The proposed deep sleep decreases the ONU's power consumption on power failure, which leads a longer battery backup time.
