| (in English) | Recent studies reported that the performance of layered neural networks to approximate multivariable functions improves greatly by converting the analogue input value into a multidimensional binary pattern. This study examines the effectiveness of such method, called pattern coding, in pattern classification. Numerical experiments on two-dimensional two-class classification roblems show that a multilayer perceptron can learn very complex decision boundaries when pattern coding is applied; pattern coding is also quite effective for a simple perceptron if selective desensitization is applied together. We propose some barometers to express the complexity of the boundary quantitatively and showed they have sufficiently high correlations with classification errors. These barometers may be useful to determine what classifier and coding should be used. | |
