Transmission Power Control Method Based on Shared Metric Among Base Stations for Downlink Heterogeneous Networks

(in English) This paper proposes a simple transmission power control method based on shared metric among base stations (BS) for heterogeneous networks, where the macro BS with large transmission power is overlaid with the pico or femto BSs with small transmission power. This paper is aimed at maximization of the worst user throughput in downlink heterogeneous networks. The proposed method is categorized into the inter-BS cooperation type. However, different from the conventional BS cooperative transmission power control methods which require exchanging a large amount of channel state information among BSs, the proposed method can be implemented by exchanging a small amount of information. In the proposed method, BSs exchange the minimum value of user throughput and, as a result, share the tentative worst user throughput within the cooperated cells. Using this shared metric information, each BS updates its transmission power so that the target throughput is achieved for all users served by that BS. Although the procedure of the proposed method is computationally efficient and the amount of the shared information via backhaul is very limited, the worst user throughput achieved by the proposed method is very close to the upper bound performance. The multi-cell simulation evaluation reveals that the proposed method is effective in increasing the worst user throughput and reducing transmission power compared to the conventional approaches.
