Mendelsohn maneuver is one of the typical methods for swallowing rehabilitation. But this maneuver has a fundamental problem that it is difficult to obtain sufficient training effects because of the difficulty in learning. Then in order to assist the maneuver, we have been developing a swallowing function evaluation system, named SFN/3A, which can visualize the mid-saggital contour of the skin surface of the anterior neck by measuring it in real time. In addition, patient’s larynx motion can be visually fed back to him or her by tracking the larynx motion. In persons without an eminent larynx, however, the tracking sometimes failed. Then, for improving the trackability of the system, we improved the previous tracking software into a new version, subsequently evaluating its effects by using experiments with swallowing a small amount of water. All empirical results demonstrated that the system’s trackability increased nearly twofold without influencing the values of other swallowing parameters such as the amount and speed of the larynx elevation. |
