Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Rechargeable batteries are used as energy storage devices in spacecraft. The specific advantages of lithium-ion battery in energy density and working voltage offer the possibility of huge reductions in battery mass compared to Alkaline batteries such as Ni-Cd and Ni-H2. First launch of the lithium-ion battery in the world was 2001. In Japan, the lithium ion battery were demonstrated for space application using SERVIS-1 launched in 2002 and used for HAYABUSA in 2003. Since 2009, the H-II Transfer Vehicle(HTV) and QZSS were successfully launched and operated, and this was the first practical spacecraft. which used the large capacity 100Ah-class lithium ion battery. In this paper, we report a current status of the lithium ion cells and future plan in JAXA.
