(in English) Space-domain signal processing with MIMO systems has been extensively studied and commercially used for various wireless communication systems. However, adaptive antennas that are considered predecessors of MIMO systems had been studied for military use, but they had not been recognized as effective for commercial wireless systems for a long time. In this talk, the speaker will introduce studies on space-domain signal processing from adaptive antennas in the 1980s to current MIMO systems, and will present how it has contributed to the development of wireless communications. Especially, he will present in detail the space division multiple access (SDMA) in the PHS, which, to the best of his knowledge, was the first commercial use of spatial multiplexing in the world. SDMA is the technique that accommodates multiple users with a multi-beam adaptive antenna at a basestation. This technique has been currently extended to a multi-user MIMO system.
